Spring 2021
Dear Friends,

Welcome back to Berkeley! Hope you all had a wonderful break and are keeping safe.

This semester we commemorate two major milestones in Bangladesh. First, 2020-21 is the birth Centenary of the Founding Father of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. To honor Bangabandhu and his many contributions, the Chowdhury Center is pleased to partner with the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations and UNESCO on a virtual celebration on March 2nd

Second, to celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh's independence, we are pleased to partner with the American Institute for Bangladesh Studies (AIBS) on two virtual events. The first is focused on the economic transformations in the country over the last 50 years, and the second one on the foreign policy path the country has taken and the path forward. We hope to organize an in-person conference with many speakers and panels at UC Berkeley this Fall.

We kick off the semester with Celebrating Rabindranath Tagore, a two-week long virtual festival. Featuring lectures and presentations by eminent scholars of Tagore Studies, Rabindrasangeet performances by world renowned artists, as well as a staging of Dak Ghar, this festival is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to showcase the life and legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. Please visit the festival homepage for further details on the various events and information on how to attend. See the coverage in Protidin (in Bangla).

Other events this semester include a lecture on understanding infectious disease in Bangladesh by Professor Ayesha Mahmuda conversation between writer and filmmaker, Naeem Mohaiemen and Senior curator of Photography at Tate Modern, Yasufumi Nakamori, and a workshop on gender, sexuality, and violence.

Please mark your calendars for a special event featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Interpreter of Maladies & The NamesakeJhumpa Lahiri. Dr. Lahiri will be in conversation with Professor Harsha Ram (Comparative Literature). This event is co-presented with the Townsend Center for the Humanities and the Arts and Humanities Dean's Office at UC Berkeley.

A detailed list of all our events lined up for this semester is included below. All our events are video recorded and made available on our website. Please scroll to the bottom of the page to see all the newly added videos.

In 2020, the Chowdhury Center in partnership with BRAC University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and James P. Grant School of Public Health,  conducted a rapid survey with more than 1,000 garment workers to understand the impact of the pandemic on their livelihoods.  The results of the study received widespread coverage in the media and continues to inform advocacy campaigns for key international labor organizations (like RemakeClean Clothes Campaign and the Business and Human Rights Resource Center). and serve as a resource for researchers and policy makers.

If you know someone who would like to join our Center list serve then please tell them to fill out this FORM

We look forward to seeing you at one of our many virtual events this semester! Please continue to stay safe and well. We look forward to seeing you in person this Fall.

STUDENT RESEARCH

Anushah Hossain (Energy and Resources Group), the Subir Chowdhury Fellow on the Quality of Life in Bangladesh, whose project focuses on a Socio-Technical History of Bangla Computing says, "I've been lucky to have been able to continue my research remotely with the Chowdhury Center's support. Over the past term, I have been reviewing digital archives and interviewing early internet pioneers from South Asia and beyond who helped develop the tools we use to type in Bangla today. They foresaw the need for full expression of language and culture online -- it has been interesting to learn of past challenges and motivations while living through a time when the importance of digital technologies has become most obvious."

Tausif Noor (Art History), the Malini Chowdhury Fellow on Bangladesh Studies, studies the intersections between artistic practices and processes of political liberation in Bangladesh and West Bengal during his fellowship year. About his award, he says, "I am grateful for the support of the Chowdhury Center as I begin my PhD dissertation on the rich art historical traditions of twentieth-century Bangladesh. I am especially excited to study how the twentieth-century art of Bangladesh was intertwined with internationalist politics that produced networks of cross-cultural solidarities. It has been truly meaningful to have the support of the Chowdhury fellowship as I trace the role of art writing in shaping and sustaining these networks in Bangladesh."
VIEWPOINT & MEDIA

GENDER, SEXUALITY, & VIOLENCE IN BANGLADESH

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. The Daily Star ran one Op-Ed daily during last year's campaign.
