Fall 2021
Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Fall semester. The last several months have been difficult for all of us and I hope that you and your loved ones are all safe and well. Our events continue to be virtual this semester, but despite the many constraints still in place, we continue to organize programs on a wide variety of themes, support graduate students, fundraise for new programs, publish articles and working papers, and highlight scholarship on various contemporary topics. Please do share our events with friends and colleagues, especially those based in South Asia. The advantage of Zoom is that audience members can attend from anywhere around the world.

After a year-long gap, we are thrilled to hold our Annual Reception on Tuesday, September 28, between 4 and 6 pm, at 10 Stephens Hall. Please join us to meet old friends, make new ones, and collectively celebrate the start of a new academic year.

Programs this semester cover a wide variety of themes, including Tagorean visions of aesthetics and politics (Ananya Vajpeyi), governance in Bangladesh (Mirza Hasan and Naomi Hossain), agrarian commodity flows between Bangladesh and India (Sahana Ghosh), the impact of 1971 on female early marriage (Niaz Asadullah, Zaki Wahhaj, Anirban Mitra), and understanding the Covid-19 virus in Bangladesh and India (Siddhartha Mukherjee).

If you know someone who would like to join our Center's listserv, please ask them to fill out this FORM.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our many virtual events this semester! Please continue to stay safe and well.

STUDENT & FACULTY NEWS

The Chowdhury Center provides several scholarships to Berkeley students for conducting research to improve the lives of those in Bangladesh. Nazmul Ahasan, a freelance journalist based in Dhaka and Ariana Pemberton, a PhD student in the Department of History of Art, are the fellowship recipients for 2021.

Ariana received the Malini Chowdhury Fellowship on Bangladesh Studies and her work focuses on the architecture and material culture of the Habshi (Abyssinian) Dynasty in Bengal (including both West Bengal and Bangladesh), and brings into light the agency and sense of identity articulated by the first-ever African rulers of South Asia.

Nazmul was awarded the Subir Chowdhury Fellowship on the Quality of Life in Bangladesh for his work on investigative journalism, long-form writing and interactive news presentations at the UC Berkeley School of Journalism. Born and brought up in Khagrachari, Nazmul's journalism career started at the Daily Manab Zamin; he later joined The Daily Star in 2017

Chowdhury Center director, Sanchita Saxena, is pleased to serve on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Bangladesh Studies. For more details about the journal and submission guidelines, please click HERE

This Fall, Chowdhury Center Director, Dr. Saxena is teaching two courses, one for undergraduates and one for MBA students, titled, Business and Labor Rights in Global Supply Chains at the Haas School of Business. This class will help students to understand the difficulty of ensuring good labor rights in very complex settings with a strong focus on Bangladesh.

NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

The Chowdhury Center is thrilled to announce the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Research Award. A new privately funded opportunity, the award will allow us to bring one or two graduate students or early career faculty members each year from accredited institutions in the United States and in Europe to share their research on Bangabandhu and/or Bangladesh with the UC Berkeley community. We hope to officially launch this award in Spring 2022.
