On 20 December last year, the Bengali language daily Prothom Alo published a statement signed by a group of 50 prominent individuals (one revoked her position a day later). It expressed concern over the effects on freedom of expression of the guilty judgment issued by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in a contempt-of-court case.

Every year in February the Dhaka University area proudly hosts its Ekushey Boi Mela or the the Book Fair commemorating the 21st of February, now celebrated as the International Mother Langauge Day. With spring in the air, the fair is a time of celebration of the Bengali language and the struggle for cultural sovereignty that gave the language its place in the world.

After three months of doom and gloom, arrested protests and tyranny on citizens through petrol bombs and strikes, Dhaka and Chittagong came alive in April with the call of the mayoral elections that were held on the 28th of April, 2015. The impending Dhaka and Chittagong city corporation elections were received jubilantly for several reasons.

Bangladesh has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world and estimates suggest 74% are married below the age of 18 years.1 From a health perspective, child marriage results in pregnancy and childbirth complications, and other adverse health consequences on young women and their newborns.
